Sex.info sold for a Whooping $202K on Sedo!

Sex.info sold for a Whooping $202K on Sedo - new .info record!

.. And I can still remember the times when I used to register 300-600 .info’s at a time on RegisterFly (R.I.P.) for $.60 each to build adsense scrapers, just because it was so cheap :D

This is all very good news for .info’s, together with $116K sales of Travel.info in July this year on Sedo and $70K sale of NewYork.info I can see a new trend coming out soon and info’s wont be any more considered crappy cheap domains - although that will take some more time.

.info domains are mostly great for GEO sites, like cities and countries .info so I believe it’s a good idea to go search for some available cities to register with that - I already did :) I picked up a few hundred .info cities a month ago, will get more soon as well.
ONe thing though, have you seen any .info domain with dashes sold for anything decent lately..? Neither did I, so the hypenated domains are still only good for scaper sites!

Business.com sold for $345M

Not bad for a site full of “adsense scrapers style” looking pages, like this.

Would you pay $345M for 365k pages of crappy ppc ads..?

Not likely, but Business.com has 100 employees, is profitable and on track to deliver $50 million in 2007 revenue, then it looks like a really good deal :)

For more on the story see zdnet

A short reminder: these guys paid $7.5 million for business.com in late 1999, so it’s a nice profit too ;)

SEO.com sold for $5M

Another proof that domaining and SEO will shape the future of the Internet!

The domain SEO.com was sold for $5M to Mike Mann.

He sold BuyDomains a few years ago for $65+ Million but he didn’t go quietly into retirement. He started a Venture Capital firm in Washington DC called WashingtonVC. Mike has always known the value of good domain names. Most of his startups have excellent Generic Domain Names and he tries to build solid companies on top of those domain names. That is a great formula for success.

Spammers love nofollow!

Spammers love nofollow and they love my blog..

Akismet has caught 20,814 spam for you since you installed it.

Since I removed the nofollows from links in comments the amount of spammy trckbacks and comments has been up. In fact now I’m receiving hundreds of spam comments per day which makes it totally impossible to surf through askimet’s caught spam to find any good comments that were caught by mistake.. so if any of you had they comment unpublished try to make it look less spammy to pass through askimet ;)

I’ve heard about a few simple tricks that can help decrease the numbers significantly, like maybe renaming the comment/trackback filename, but I have no idea how to do it yet :o

Snapnames Deep Pockets

Just a couple minutes ago a few snapnames auctions ended for some of the domains I was bidding on and well.. I was outbidden on all of them today, but I did buy a couple good domains through snapnames in the last few days.

People are bidding like crazy in the last 5 minutes! Imho most of the domains were sold for more than their retail value, and probably more than what would have been offered at dnforums.

The domains: you see it first here! Just a couple minutes after the auctions are over and before the sales are reported.

vasilisa.com - $1,024 - The girl’s name from a popular Russian fairy tale. Ok, how many girls do you know named Vasilisa? Um, let me guess… 0? Right, because except for the Russian fairy tale heroes and porn stars no one uses it. Well I would have paid $300, maybe even up to $500, but come on.. over $1k for some very rare name.

ilsa.com - $5,551 - That one is just crazy. 12 years old, all premium letters and pronouncable, but still maybe $550, not $5.5K  It has a bunch of possible meanings, but nothing of comercial value, so I just don’t get it.

psdi.com - $632 - All premium letters 4 letter .com - these are the buzz now, so everyone tries to grab them. May be I should have bidden more on this one.
According to acronymattic and acronymfinder it has a bunch of acronyms, most popular one is Partito Socialista Democratico Italiano, which is one of smaller political parties in Italy, s i suppose this one has really good potential.

VND.net - $1350 - I bid $1300 on this one, just 2 minutes before it closed, but was outbidden and decided to give it up, figured $1.4K would be high for a 3 letter .net, even though VND is the Vietnamese national currency - Vietnamese đồng. But you probably never heard of it, so it’s not very popular. I believe that $1.3-1.4k is about the right reseller price for it.

Some ongoing auctions

loran.com - currently at $2,150, 23 hours to go - it’s quite a popular girl name, so my guess is it would sell for around $4-6k

atmcash.com - currently at $1,550.00, 2 days to go. Very premium finance name, will be
interesting to see the final price, but it’s hard to estimate what it’s really worth.

I’ve been following a bunch of auctions on SnapNames and there are really a lot - thousands of domains are being auctioned every day and it’s almost impossible to buy anything valuable at bargain prices :( same goes for sedo auctions. Domain forums are still the best place to get quality domains at bargain prices.

Traffic Estimates

So.. how can you know number of visitors a certain sites has, without having the access to any stats?

Well, you can’t.. obviously :) but you can get an estimate - mostly based on alexa.
Check out Compete.com

It shows an estimated number of unique US residents who visited  the domain in a given month.

Obviously it’s just an estimate, but I gotta admit it’s better than other estimates I’ve seen before - other similar sites: trafficestimate.com, statbrain.com
